Summer is almost here! This year, the UK got an early taste of summery weather, which had us all desperately searching for last year’s sunscreen. If you felt unprepared for 25 degree heat in April, you weren’t alone! The weather was definitely a reminder to stock up on summer beauty products, and go through last year’s stash and throw away anything that’s out of date. Here are the products that should be on your shopping list.
Yep, sunscreen should be your top priority! Every beauty expert recommends wearing high factor sunscreen each day in summer, and topping up throughout the day. Sun damage is responsible for most of the visible ageing of your skin – even if you tan instead of burn, it’s still a sign that your skin is being damaged.
Apply sunscreen generously – aim for at least factor 30, and look for products with both UVA and UVB protection. Don’t forget about your hands, either! Your hands show their age relatively quickly, so it’s important to protect them from the sun as much as possible.
SPF makeup generally shouldn’t be used as an alternative to sunscreen in the summer, but it’s a good idea to use it regardless, as it provides another layer of protection for your skin. In particular, stock up on SPF lipbalm. After all, you probably don’t apply sunscreen to your lips, and the skin here is particularly thin and vulnerable to sun damage. Apply it before using your favourite lipstick or lipgloss over the top.
Heavy winter fragrances become overpowering in the heat of summer, so switch to something lighter. Look for summer variants of your favourite fragrances if you’re not sure where to start.
BB/CC creams and tinted moisturisers
Take a lighter approach to makeup, too. Replace moisturisers, primers, foundation, and powders with a single product – either a BB or CC cream, or a tinted moisturiser. Tinted moisturisers are fantastic for very light coverage with a focus on hydrating your skin, while BB and CC creams tend to be slightly heavier, last longer, and usually have higher SPF. Choose what works for you on any given day!
The only safe tan is a fake one! Start stocking up on your favourite self-tanning products now, particularly if you prefer to use gradual tanning products for a natural glow that builds over time.
Stock up on razors, waxing kits, creams, and whatever other hair removal products you use for a smoother summer!
Regular mascara won’t cut it during the summer heat. Grab some good quality makeup remover so that you don’t lose any eyelashes(!) when you’re desperately trying to scrub your waterproof mascara off!
