How to De-Stress This Christmas

If you’re hosting family or friends over the Christmas period, you may already be apprehensive about your responsibilities! You’ve probably started figuring out the timing logistics of cooking Christmas dinner and checking there’ll definitely be enough food for everyone, but the biggest pressure is often to make sure that everyone has a good time!

Don’t let this pressure ruin your Christmas. Take the time to de-stress over the festive season so that you can enjoy it as much as your guests. Not sure where to start? Here are some top tips!

Don’t be afraid to ask for help!

Instead of automatically turning down generous offers of help from your guests, accept them and give them some work to do! It’s easier to focus on the food when you know the table’s already set and you’ve got someone to help you serve. You can take this one step further and ask guests to bring along something other than a bottle – how about a side-dish, some snacks, or a dessert?

Take a step back

Whenever you start to feel stressed or under pressure, catch yourself and take deep breaths. Give yourself a minute to compose yourself and you’ll likely find that there was nothing worth getting stressed over.

Find time for you

When you’re so focused on making sure everyone else is happy, it’s easy to forget your own feelings! Take some time out away from the family to concentrate entirely on you – that could mean going to a class at the gym, taking a long bath, going for a coffee with a friend, or simply spending more time on your daily skincare and makeup routine.

Get outdoors

Spending time at the park, in the woods, or elsewhere with nature is one of the best ways to switch off and de-stress. Wrap up warm, take the family for a stroll (or even a hike!), turn off your smartphone and enjoy the outdoors.

Be mindful

Mindfulness is all about giving something in the present moment your complete attention, helping you acknowledge your thoughts and feelings, and accept them. The stressful Christmas period is the perfect time to try out mindfulness and put your Christmas-related problems into perspective.

Don’t aim for perfection

In the age of Instagram, we’re all expected to be perfect all of the time – not least at Christmas when everyone is constantly taking photos and expected to be having a ball. It’s all too easy to pressure yourself into expecting everything to work out perfectly. But the reality is, no-one’s Christmas is perfect. There will always be arguments, accidents and unforeseen problems.

So instead of aiming for perfection, just try to do the best you can given the circumstances. Don’t let a split glass of wine or burnt sprouts ruin the rest of your Christmas!

To wrap-up: this Christmas, don’t forget to look after yourself as well as your guests. Whether you need a soak in the bath,  have to delegate tasks, or spend some time outdoors, do whatever you need to to de-stress this Christmas!
