As much as we love the summer, there’s no doubt that it can play havoc with our hair! If you’re prone to frizz at the best of times, summer is practically frizzmageddon. Instead of letting your fight with frizz spoil your summer, take action to defend your locks from the elements!
#1 Shampooing tips
First up, make a few small changes to your hair-washing routine. We recommend switching to a sulphate free shampoo (if you don’t use one already), as the harshness of sulphate shampoos can dry out hair – something we’re all looking to avoid when fighting frizz. If possible, cut down on washing your hair – aim for every other day for straighter hair, or every three days (or more) for curly hair. Obviously this all depends on your hair type and your lifestyle!
Use a deep conditioner regularly – these rich, luxurious conditioners help your hair recover, while strengthening it for the days to come.
#3 Combing and drying
Brushing your hair while its wet is a huge no-no if you’ve got curls, but even those of us with straighter locks should avoid doing it, too! When your hair’s still wet, it’s more vulnerable to breakages – and brushing will do just that. Instead, use a wide toothed comb and gently work through your hair from ends to roots.
Instead of drying your hair with a towel or heat, another trick for curly hair is to ‘plop’ your hair in a t-shirt or microfibre towel! Here’s a video tutorial if you’re new to plopping. You can either plop your hair overnight, or use the technique for 30-60 minutes before removing the t-shirt and letting your hair air dry the rest of the way.
#4 Oils, balms and lotions
Even if you don’t use many products in your hair in the cooler months, in summer you should try out several oils, serums and balms to see if they help you with the frizz situation. Argan oil, coconut oil and olive oil are also good options, but don’t forget to check out products from your favourite brands, too – there is no product that works for absolutely everyone, we’re all different!
#5 Emergency frizz fighting
When a frizz emergency hits, you might be surprised that some of the products you carry around in your handbag could act as a temporary fix. Vaseline, body lotion, and even hand cream can tame frizz – but only use these products in small quantities and on small sections of your hair. These are definitely just quick fixes and should never be used as replacements for hair products!
We hope these frizz fixes will help you stay chic this summer!
