Healthy hair is important to all of us, whether we have short or long locks; curls, waves or poker straight hair. Minimising breakages and maximising natural shine is not only important for the health of our hair, but also how it looks. There are endless fancy (and weird) regimes and products out there for healthy hair (bull semen hair treatment, anyone?), but you can get healthier hair much more easily than that!
Here are ten easy hair care tips for healthier hair!
When applying shampoo, keep it to your scalp only. When you rinse your hair, the shampoo will clean right down your hair anyway – there’s no reason to waste product and dry out your hair by applying all over.
One of the easiest ways to promote healthy hair growth is to massage your scalp as you wash your hair. This boosts blood circulation and encourages your hair to grow. You might even find this relaxing, too!
#3 Don’t wash every day
Try to cut down your shampoo washes to twice a week – or at least aim for only every other day. Shampoo strips your hair of its natural oils. Your scalp then produces oils at a faster rate to compensate, so your hair gets oily more quickly. This vicious cycle leaves many of us needing to shampoo at least once a day, which dries out the hair and increases the risk of breakage.
Remember: you can still wash with conditioner or just give your hair a rinse on the days without shampoo.
#4 Don’t condition saturated hair
Before conditioning, take the time to towel dry your hair. If you don’t fancy the idea of ducking out of the shower for more than a second, at the very least carefully squeeze the excess water out of your hair before applying conditioner. What’s the reason behind this tip? Well, if your hair is saturated with water it won’t be able to absorb any conditioner. By drying your hair slightly, your conditioner will be more effective.
#5 Use cold or lukewarm water
Again, this tip is all about boosting the impact of your conditioner. Rinsing your conditioned hair with cooler water helps lock in the conditioner – warmer water is more likely to dry out your hair and prevent the conditioner being fully absorbed.
When you go swimming in a chlorinated pool, dampen your hair and apply conditioner first. This acts as a slight waterproof barrier that should protect your hair from the worst of the chlorine and its drying effects.
Drying and Other Care Tips
#7 Don’t brush when wet
Brushing your hair when it’s wet is a sure-fire way to cause breakages. Instead, use a wide-toothed comb – start at the ends and work up.
#8 Don’t dry your hair with a towel
The rough surface of a towel can cause breakages. Instead, use an old t-shirt or a microfibre towel. Although they can’t absorb as much water as a towel, they do absorb water quickly – without damaging your hair.
#9 Reduce heat
Try to decrease the number of days you use a hair dryer, straighteners or curling tongs. Use a lower heat setting on your dryer and finish your style with a blast of cool air. When you do use heat, use a heat protecting spray.
#10 Switch pillowcases
Switching to a silk pillowcase can significantly reduce breakages and frizz, particularly for those of us with curly hair.
