Winter is here – and with it comes a whole set of new beauty challenges. You have two choices: resolutely stick to the same routine and hope for the best, or make a couple of smart changes to your beauty routine to see off the worst of winter!
Here’s what you’re up against: the cold, windy weather of winter strips the moisture from your skin, whilst also making it more vulnerable to irritation. The heat blasting from the radiators at home, in your car and at the office doesn’t provide your skin with much respite either – they dry out the air, decreasing humidity to below usual levels, further parching your skin.
Winter is particularly tough on those of us with dry skin – these conditions only worsen our problems! However, whatever your skin type, it’s smart to switch up your routine for winter.
#1 Rich moisturiser
In summer, a lighter moisturiser stopped the heat and sweat from becoming uncomfortable – but in winter, you really need to opt for something heavier. Try to avoid overly-fragranced products as these tend to irritate the skin, particularly when it’s already vulnerable thanks to the wintry conditions!
#2 Oil-based cleanser
Gels and oil-free cleansers might work in summer, but in winter switch to oil-based cleansers. These will help lock-in moisture and further protect your skin.
You may have some concerns about exfoliators drawing more moisture from your skin, but it’s important to continue exfoliating through winter. You need to exfoliate to remove dead skin cells, allowing your moisturiser to get to your healthy skin. It’s also worth applying moisturiser immediately after exfoliating while your pores are open. However, don’t overdo exfoliating! If you exfoliate too frequently you’ll only start to irritate your skin. Keep it to once a week.
#4 Eye cream
The skin around your eyes is thin and delicate at the best of times, but in winter it’s particularly vulnerable. Eye cream might be a worthwhile investment at this time of year!
#5 Overnight masks and night cream
You might usually skip this step in your beauty routine, but during winter, it’s a good idea to take every opportunity to work on building moisture in your skin! Look for rich, nourishing night creams and hydrating overnight masks.
#6 Don’t forget your lips!
Again, you might be able to forego the lip balm in summer but in winter your lips will thank you if you pay them some attention! Dig out a protective lip balm (avoid menthol lip balms as these can irritate your lips!) and apply frequently and regularly during the winter months.
If you spend a lot of time indoors and struggle with the dry heat from your radiators, it might be time to ‘splash out’ on a humidifier! These nifty devices increase the humidity of a room and stop your skin from dehydrating!
As we mentioned at the start of this article, you need to choose the skincare routine that works best for you and your skin. By figuring out your biggest winter skincare problems and learning how to tackle them, you’ll keep your skin in tip-top shape all year round!
