How to care for your curls

Curly hair looks great, but it can be a pain to manage. While your straight-haired friends are able to walk out the door barely having to do a thing with their hair, you probably have to spend a little more time if you want your curls to look their best. It’s not all about buying the most expensive conditioner you can get your hands on or hiding under a hat on bad hair days – with a few easy changes to your beauty routine, you can make your curls shine, almost effortlessly! Direct Cosmetics have put together a series of quick beauty tips for making your naturally curly hair look fantastic throughout the year!

#1: Don’t fight your curls
Straightening your hair might seem like the easy option, but exposing your hair to that amount of heat every day won’t do it any good! You’ll doubtless end up with dry, brittle hair with hundreds of split ends, so work with your curls – don’t fight them.
#2: Wash every other day
Naturally curly hair loses it moisture easily, particularly if you wash it with shampoo every day. Wash your locks with shampoo on alternate days at the very most to keep it looking and feeling healthy.
#3: Condition
Even if you don’t use shampoo every time you shower, you can still apply conditioner each time! Use a deep conditioner between washes to keep your hair looking shiny, silky and fabulous day in, day out.
#4: Resist brushing your hair when it’s dry
You’ll only damage your hair if you brush it when it’s dry, plus it’ll reduce your curl definition – or worse – make your curls pop outwards until you’re sporting a veritable birds nest! Instead, comb through it gently using your fingers.
#5: Diffusers are your best friend
Never blow-dry your hair unless you’re using a diffuser attachment! In all likelihood, blow-drying your hair conventionally will make your gorgeous curls turn into a frizzy, unmanageable mess! Stick to a diffuser or let your hair dry more naturally.
#6: Get a good cut
Find a stylist in your area who knows how to work with curly hair. Hint: if they have curly hair themselves, they probably know a trick or two! It’s also vital that you get some layers cut in, otherwise it could make your style look bottom-heavy and unbalanced.
#7: Avoid the crunch
As tempting as it is to pile on the products in an attempt to tame your mane, less is more – up to a point, at least! While mousse or other styling products can help define your curls if used sparingly, if you use too much your hair will end up crunchy and stiff!
#8: Deep conditioner
It’s important to lock in all the moisture you can if you have ultra-curly hair. Treat your hair to a weekly intensive conditioner session to keep it from drying out. If you can get your hands on it, try coconut oil!
These tips are just the start – you could also experiment by switching to a satin or silk pillowcase, or, if you’re feeling particularly brave – cut shampoo out of your hair care routine completely!
