How to choose the right moisturiser

How to choose the right moisturiserMoisturisers are an essential part of every girl’s make-up armoury and a crucial part of our morning beauty routines – but how do we know if we have the right one? Many of us rely on trial and error to find the right moisturiser, but there’s a less expensive (and quicker!) route that you can take instead. Here’s what you need to look out for when you’re trying to find the perfect moisturiser for you.

#1 How do moisturisers actually work?

To understand how to choose the right moisturiser, it’s important to know the ins and outs of how they work. Moisturisers are usually lipid or sterol based and contain humectants – components that attract water. Moisturisers lock natural moisture into the skin, preventing it from drying up. A good moisturiser will keep your skin feeling soft and supple all day long.

#2 Where are you using it?

If you just want a general moisturiser to use all-over, you’ll want a different moisturiser than if you just want a product for your face. Similarly, the under eye area is extremely delicate, and you’ll probably want to plump for a moisturiser that’s specifically designed for application around the eyes if you’re trying to banish those dark circles.

 #3 What’s your skin type?

We all know how important it is to choose a foundation based on your skin type, and with moisturiser, it’s equally important – if not more so! The whole point of a moisturiser is to hydrate your skin, but if you’ve already got oily skin you don’t want to add any further oils to it if you can possibly help it. If you have oily skin, make sure you choose a water based moisturiser rather than an oil based one. Conversely, if you suffer from dry skin, choose a heavier moisturiser without alcohol in it, or look for products containing petrolatum (petroleum jelly). If you have sensitive skin, try moisturisers with aloe or camomile in them and avoid acidic products.

 #4 What’s your budget?

You can find good moisturisers without spending a fortune, but if you’re looking to spend a little extra money, you should consider buying moisturisers with higher SPF ratings. This will protect your skin from harmful UV radiation, staving off damage and the visible effects of ageing for longer. Combining a moisturiser with a good exfoliator will drastically improve the health of your skin, stopping the formation of spots and blackheads.

 #5 Make your choice!

Now you should have a much clearer idea of how to choose the right moisturiser for you. If you know what you want to use it for, what budget you have, and what your skin type is, you’re almost there.
