Your cosmetic routine should be specifically tailored to get the best from your facial attributes, but all the makeup in the world can’t make you look your best if your hair is having a shocker. If your face is an exquisite renaissance portrait, your hair should be the gilt-edged frame that holds the whole look together, but haircare is all too often undervalued, by both men and women. Here’s what you should – and shouldn’t – be doing to get the best from your barnet.
Don’t: Over or under-wash
Only you know whether you have naturally dry, normal or greasy hair, and it’s up to you to take steps to ensure that excess dryness and abundant grease aren’t allowed to set in and take hold. Greasy hair needs to be washed more frequently, as your hair is producing an excess of its natural oils and if allowed continue this can lead to dandruff and lankness. Dry hair should not be washed every day however, as it needs time to replenish the natural oils that are so abundant in those with greasy hair.
Do: Wash it better
Now that you know how often you should be looking to wash your hair, be sure to use the right products when you do so. There are anti-dandruff shampoos and other products out there for those with greasy hair, but dry or damaged hair is harder to repair, particularly if you’ve abused your do with frequent straightening or curling in the past. Pick up some repair shampoo for damaged hair to help restore the moisture that heat treatments can leech from your hair, allowing you to restore dull and lackluster locks that have been on the wrong end of some aggressive styling.
All too many people fail to condition their hair, or rely on products boasting 2-in-1 properties. In our experience, these are no substitute for the two individual products on their own, so get yourself a decent conditioner to give yourself a bit of shine, shimmer and lustre. You too guys – no-one wants to run their hands through a head of hair as dull and lustreless as a Labrador’s fur.
Here’s one for the lads. How many times have we seen blokes who have slapped gels, waxes and pastes into their hair with seemingly reckless abandon? Too much product is never a good look – it comes across as too try-hard and can make hair appear greasy or dirty. We’re not saying you should abandon the styling products completely, just use your gels and waxes with more subtlety and restraint in future!
