As Nature Intended: How to perfect the ‘natural’ makeup look

Most women know how to use their very best name brand makeup for a night out or a special occasion, but a far rarer skill is the ability to create a flawless ‘natural’ look. Your cosmetic routine should be used to accentuate what you have whilst simultaneously masking imperfections – the most skilfully applied makeup is the stuff you don’t notice. Read our five-step guide to perfecting the natural makeup look and trick everyone into thinking you look naturally radiant all the time!

1. Prepare

Makeup should never, ever go on dirty skin; you couldn’t paint a masterpiece on a soiled canvas, could you?Use a gentle facial toner and cleanser along with lukewarm water to wash your face before applying moisturiser. There are many different kinds of moisturiser and they all suit different skin types, so read our useful guide to moisturisers before you pick yours. Top tip – always remember to gently massage the product into your face, allowing the moisture to really soak into your skin.

2. Conceal

Once your skin is clean and has been dabbed dry with a clean, soft towel, it’s time to conceal any little imperfections that may have sprung up on your skin. Make sure you get a concealer that’s as close as possible to your natural skin tone – the last thing you want is for it to stand out against your authentic colouring. Carefully blend the product in to any areas of discolouration (spots, blemishes, redness, under-eye circles) with clean fingertips, and your skin should have a clear and consistent all-over tone.

3. Eyes

Remember – nude makeup isn’t synonymous with none at all. You want to look for barely-there shades that give you a natural sparkle and shimmer that exudes health, energy and vitality. Steer clear of dark mascara and only apply the slightest trace of eyeliner before delicately blending a light, shimmery eyeshadow onto your upper and lower lids.

 4. Lips

There’s no reason not to go nude with both your eyes and your lips – eau natural is the done thing this winter, darlings. Look for a colour as close as possible to the natural tone of your lips and carefully apply, giving you a smooth glossy finish that could be natural but, you know, isn’t…

5. Finish

You’ve come this far, and now it’s time to finish off the look with aplomb. Like your eyeshadow, a subtle, barely-there blush will help your cheeks to catch the light and dazzle onlookers – remember, light and shimmery! Highlighters complete the packages, providing a natural sheen on the tops of your cheekbones, your forehead and your nose.

All finished? Your natural makeup look should now have you turning heads for all the right reasons. Take a look at our full range of cosmetics here and don’t forget to to let your friends in on our little secrets!
