Here at Direct Cosmetics we like to keep an eye on the catwalks of Paris, Milan, New York and London, hoping to catch a glimpse of the cosmetic trends set to dominate the coming seasons. The thing with catwalk makeup trends, however, is that they tend to be a little outlandish – fine for the confident, picture-perfect girls who strut their stuff on stage, but not so practical for regular women in day-to-day scenarios. Does this mean that we can’t keep up with the cutting edge of fashion? We don’t think so! Here’s how you can apply some of the makeup trends of Spring / Summer 2013 in an everyday setting, and best of all, on a budget!
Ask anyone from Prada to Dolce & Gabbana – red lips are back with a vengeance for 2013. Not everyone has the confidence to rock a red lip look however, and if they do, they’re more likely to sport the style on a night out than around the office. Again, it’s a look that works brilliantly on the catwalk but can send out the wrong impression if worn around the office. So, is there a way to tone down this cosmetic trend? Certainly! Fortunately for the more reserved women among us, minimalism is also a popular look for spring / summer 2013, so try coupling red lips with a flawless nude cosmetic look. Pick a warm, matte shade of red lipstick, too, as they can look a little more subtle than full gloss lips.
The retro-futurist colour pop trend is set to be all the rage throughout the coming season, but can you really see yourself nipping to the shops sporting shocking orange eyeshadow? Fortunately, you don’t have to smother both lids in pigment to pay lip service to this particular cosmetic trend, and you may even be able to tame it enough for everyday use! Again, the colour pop trend can be teamed with a nude look, so leave your lips alone and allow your eyes to pull focus if you’re going to give it a try. Apply a swish of eye-catching colour to the crease above your upper eyelid, or conversely, directly beneath your lower lash line for a tamer take on a catwalk classic.
Surely I can’t be the only one who thinks the ’90s are too recent to be undergoing a retro revival? ’90s catwalks were dominated by the bushy brows of early supermodels, but this resurgent trend can be traced all the way back to Audrey Hepburn and others in the 1960s. Wherever it came from, the full eyebrow trend is back, and while it may look great on the perfect little faces of the catwalk supermodels, it’s likely to look like evidence of a mental breakdown on the rest of us! Again, moderation is the key if you want to ascribe to this particular trend. If you are going to grow your brows out, don’t let them get out of hand – keep a pair of tweezers nearby to ensure that they remain shapely and full, rather than grizzly! If you don’t have naturally bushy eyebrows, use a brow brush and powder to add depth and volume to your brows.
